THE NEGROES HAVE RISEN is a poetic historical dramedy that contains depictions and discussions of the enslavement of people of African descent, anti-Black racism, plantation history, and the lasting effects of historical violence. While engaging directly with these themes, the play ultimately centers connection, care, humor, and the power of Black memory and community.
The story explores the emotional and psychological impact of working within a former plantation and includes references to enslavement, racial trauma, systemic oppression, and dehumanization. Audience members should also be aware that the play contains strong language; discussions of violence, including references to murder, arson, and threats of physical harm; depictions of interpersonal conflict and a brief physical altercation; references to animal experimentation and death; the American carceral system; discussions and depictions of substance use, including marijuana; and themes of grief, isolation, and institutional power.
