By the Banks is a lyrical family drama that contains themes of grief and the death of a parent, including discussions of terminal illness, cancer, cremated remains, and end-of-life rituals. While engaging directly with these themes, the play ultimately centers humor, connection, healing, and reconciliation.
The play includes discussions of childhood sexual abuse, eating disorders, residential treatment, body image, recovery, relapse, and mental health, as well as references to addiction, alcoholism, and substance-use recovery. The play also discusses the emotional and physical impacts of these experiences, as well as trauma and its lasting effects.
The play also contains family conflict; discussions of religious belief and trauma, including references to anti-LGBTQ+ religious beliefs; strong language; and historical discussions of the enslavement of people of African descent, the Underground Railroad, racial violence, and death.
