Howling is a modern surreal fairytale that contains depictions of emotional abuse, manipulation, and abusive family relationships. While exploring these themes, the play ultimately celebrates resilience, tenderness, and the transformative power of finding genuine connection and creating a life on your own terms.
The play addresses themes of grief, loss of parents, intergenerational trauma, mental health, neurodivergence, childhood abuse (both physical and emotional), domestic violence, and experiences of social isolation. There are depictions of panic attacks, self-injury (including hitting oneself, pulling hair, and skin-picking), and discussions of therapy and psychological well-being.
The play also contains ableist language and discussions of disability, and includes strong language, alcohol use, depictions of emotional manipulation, and references to death, illness, and bereavement.
